The history of this realm begins two millennia ago when Sparda defeated the demon ruler Mundus, halting his conquest of the human world. Sparda sealed the invasion points using a ritual that required his blood and a human priestess, effectively creating barriers known as Hellgates. The most significant of these was Temen-Ni-Gru, which served as the final gate. Centuries later, the narrative of Devil May Cry 3 centers on a large tower erupting from the ground, interpreted by Dante as a challenge from his brother Vergil. Inside this structure, the ritual to open a portal to the Demon World is manipulated by Arkham. Vergil seeks to use pendants given by their mother, Eva, to create this portal. After defeating Arkham, Vergil approaches the closing portal and leaps into the Demon World. There, he encounters Mundus, the killer of his mother, and battles him using Yamato, a magical katana that once belonged to Sparda.
